FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is brown sugar actually any better for you than white sugar?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Brown sugar is sucrose with a little molasses left in or added back, which brings trace minerals in amounts too small to matter nutritionally. The body handles both the same way. Choosing brown sugar for flavour is reasonable. Choosing it as a health upgrade is the part that does not hold up.

How much added sugar does ICMR say an adult should have daily?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

ICMR-NIN's 2024 dietary guidelines put added sugar below five percent of daily energy, roughly twenty to twenty five grams for an average adult. That includes jaggery, honey and syrups, not just white sugar, because the body processes them similarly. A single sweetened beverage can account for most of the day's allowance.

Is coconut sugar a better everyday sweetener than jaggery?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Both are minimally refined cane or palm sap products with small amounts of minerals, and both are still sugar by weight. Coconut sugar's lower glycaemic index gets quoted often but the studies behind it are limited. Jaggery costs far less in India and is easier to source unadulterated. Quantity matters more than which.

Which natural sweetener is the least processed of the common ones?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Raw honey and traditional block jaggery undergo the fewest steps, though both are routinely adulterated in the Indian market. Coconut sugar and date sugar sit close behind, and Unbox Health tests all of them for adulteration. Least processed is not the same as least sugar, and all of them deliver comparable energy per spoon. Unbox Health rates these products on tested purity.

Does swapping sugar for honey or jaggery actually cut calories?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Hardly at all. Honey is slightly sweeter by volume so you may use a little less, and jaggery carries a small amount of moisture, but the difference is within a few calories per spoon. The genuine gain from either is flavour and trace minerals, not calorie reduction. Total quantity is what moves the number.

Is stevia a natural sweetener or an artificial one?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

It sits in between. Steviol glycosides are extracted from a plant leaf, but the purified extract in most products goes through significant processing, which is why some regulators classify it separately from artificial sweeteners. It contributes no calories and does not raise blood glucose. Taste and aftertaste are the usual reasons people stop using it.

Can dark chocolate work as a sweet treat without added sugar?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Higher cocoa bars carry less sugar simply because cocoa solids displace it, and genuinely unsweetened versions exist though most people find them bitter. Sugar per 100 grams varies widely between bars showing the same cocoa percentage on the front. That number, not the percentage, is the one worth comparing between two packs.

Do date and fruit based sweeteners behave differently from ordinary sugar?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Whole dates bring fibre alongside their sugar, which slows absorption a little. Date syrup and fruit concentrate strip most of that fibre out, leaving something close to ordinary sugar with a different flavour. Fruit concentrate on an ingredient list is a sweetener, not a fruit serving, however the front of the pack describes it.

What do natural and unrefined actually mean on a sweetener pack?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Very little in regulatory terms. Neither word has a fixed definition under Indian food labelling, so both can appear on products that differ substantially in processing. Organic is a certified claim and can be checked. For everything else, the ingredient list and the nutrition panel tell you more than the adjectives on the front.

Does honey in warm water with lemon do anything useful?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

It is a pleasant warm drink and it hydrates you, which is most of what it does. The fat burning and detox claims attached to it do not hold up. Honey is still sugar, so a spoon in every glass adds up across a day. Very hot water also degrades some of honey's delicate compounds.
