How We Rate Vitamin C Supplements

As of Jul 2026, Unbox Health has lab tested and rated 17 products in the Vitamin C Supplements category.

We buy every product from the open market, with no brand involvement. Every product is tested at up to 3 NABL-accredited labs. Products are then rated D to A+, based on the following dimensions: their label accuracy, their toxicity and their nutritional profile (in the case of food products). All lab reports are published.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does a vitamin C supplement actually do?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

A vitamin C supplement supplies ascorbic acid, a water-soluble vitamin your body cannot make or store. It may support immune function, collagen formation for skin and wound healing, and iron absorption from plant foods, and it acts as an antioxidant. Because the body excretes excess amounts, consistent daily intake matters more than large single doses.

Is it safe to take vitamin C tablets every day?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Yes, daily vitamin C is generally safe for healthy adults at recommended doses. The ICMR-NIN sets the adult RDA at 80 mg/day for men and 65 mg/day for women. For supplementation, the ICMR-NIN codifies a strict Tolerable Upper Limit (TUL) of 2,000 mg/day. Going beyond this threshold can cause digestive distress. Individuals with chronic kidney disease or a history of kidney stones must exercise caution.

Do I really need a vitamin C tablet if I eat amla, guava and citrus fruits?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Often no. ICMR-NIN advises meeting vitamin C needs through whole foods first. Indian sources are rich: 100g of amla provides roughly 600 mg, and guava and citrus are also high. A varied diet can easily exceed the 65 to 80 mg RDA. If you still choose a supplement, Unbox Health's lab-tested data can confirm whether a product's declared vitamin C content matches what it actually contains.

Do vitamin C tablets cause kidney stones?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

For most healthy people, no. Current evidence has not shown that vitamin C at recommended doses causes kidney stones in people with normal kidney function. Some studies associate very high doses above 1,000 mg/day with increased oxalate and higher stone risk, mainly in men or those with existing kidney conditions. If you have a history of kidney stones or hyperoxaluria, stay within RDA levels and consult a doctor.

Is natural vitamin C better than synthetic vitamin C tablets?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Chemically, no major difference. Available studies suggest synthetic ascorbic acid has bioavailability comparable to vitamin C from food, as the molecule is identical. Natural-source tablets from amla or acerola may include other plant compounds but can contain less actual vitamin C per dose than the label implies. Unbox Health's lab-tested results help you compare which brands actually deliver the vitamin C content they claim.

How much vitamin C should I take in a day?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

For healthy Indian adults, ICMR-NIN recommends 80 mg/day for men and 65 mg/day for women. Pregnant and lactating women need slightly more. Most popular tablets contain 500 to 1,000 mg, far above the RDA, and the body excretes the excess in urine. Higher doses are not more effective for general health, so you rarely need more than what diet and a modest supplement provide.

Why is vitamin C added to iron supplements?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Vitamin C improves how well your body absorbs non-heme iron, the form found in plant foods and most iron supplements. It converts iron into a form that is easier to absorb in the gut, which is why brands pair iron bisglycinate or ferrous salts with vitamin C. This combination may particularly help vegetarians, who rely on plant-based iron that is harder to absorb.

Does vitamin C help with brighter, glowing skin?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

It may help, but expectations should be realistic. Vitamin C is needed for collagen synthesis and acts as an antioxidant, and some studies associate higher intake with better skin-aging appearance. However, current evidence does not establish that oral tablets whiten or dramatically brighten skin. Many skin formulas combine it with zinc or glutathione, so Unbox Health's lab-tested data can confirm whether the declared vitamin C content is actually present.

Are 1000mg or effervescent vitamin C tablets better?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Neither is clearly better for absorption. Effervescent tablets dissolve in water and may be gentler on the stomach, but they often contain added sodium, which matters if you watch blood pressure. A 1,000 mg dose far exceeds the RDA, and the body absorbs a smaller percentage as the dose rises, excreting the rest. For daily maintenance, a lower dose taken with food is usually enough.

Which vitamin C supplement is best in India?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

There is no single best brand; the right choice depends on the dose, format, and added ingredients you need. The key differentiator is whether a product genuinely delivers the vitamin C it claims and stays free of undeclared additives. Rather than relying on marketing, check Unbox Health's independent lab-tested results to verify which brands' declared vitamin C content matches their actual tested content before you buy.
