How We Rate Chondroitin Supplements

As of Nov 2026, Unbox Health has lab tested and rated 1 products in the Chondroitin Supplements category.

We buy every product from the open market, with no brand involvement. Every product is tested at up to 3 NABL-accredited labs. Products are then rated D to A+, based on the following dimensions: their label accuracy, their toxicity and their nutritional profile (in the case of food products). All lab reports are published.

For Chondroitin Supplements, Unbox Health’s lab tests check chondroitin against the label claim, any other active ingredients claimed on the label, and heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Chondroitin and what is it used for?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Chondroitin, usually sold as chondroitin sulphate, is a natural part of cartilage that helps it hold water and absorb shock. Supplements are mainly used for joint support, especially knee osteoarthritis, and are often combined with glucosamine. Chondroitin is not an essential nutrient, so ICMR-NIN has not set any requirement for it. Evidence of benefit in healthy, active adults without joint problems is currently limited.

Is Chondroitin veg or non-veg?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Most chondroitin is non-vegetarian. It is usually extracted from cow, pig, chicken or shark cartilage, and some raw materials mix more than one source, which matters for those who avoid beef or pork. A non-animal version made by microbial fermentation exists but is uncommon in India. Check the ingredient list for a named source and the FSSAI veg or non-veg symbol before buying.

Does Chondroitin actually work for knee pain?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

The evidence is mixed. A 2015 Cochrane review found chondroitin may slightly reduce osteoarthritis pain in the short term, but most included trials were low quality, and some better-designed studies showed little benefit. When combined with glucosamine, some trials suggest people with moderate to severe knee pain may respond better than those with mild pain. Check Unbox Health's lab-tested data to verify whether declared chondroitin content matches actual tested content.

What is the difference between Glucosamine and Chondroitin?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Both are natural parts of cartilage, but they are different molecules. Glucosamine is an amino sugar the body uses to build cartilage, and is mostly made from shellfish shells. Chondroitin is a larger molecule that helps cartilage retain water, and is mostly extracted from animal cartilage. Neither is clearly proven better. Most trials test them together, which is why Indian products usually combine both.

What are the side effects of Chondroitin, and is it safe for kidneys?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Chondroitin is generally considered safe in healthy adults without pre-existing conditions at studied doses. Reported side effects are usually mild, such as nausea, bloating, stomach upset or constipation, and a Cochrane review found adverse event rates similar to comparison groups. Current evidence has not shown chondroitin to impair kidney function in healthy individuals at recommended doses, but people with kidney disease should consult their doctor first.

Is Chondroitin a blood thinner?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Chondroitin is not used as a blood thinner, but it may add to the effect of one. Case reports have linked glucosamine and chondroitin supplements with raised INR and bleeding in people taking warfarin. Anyone on warfarin or other anticoagulants, with a bleeding disorder, or scheduled for surgery should speak to their doctor first. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid it, since safety data is lacking.

How much Chondroitin should I take per day?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

ICMR-NIN has not issued any dosage guideline for chondroitin, as it is not an essential nutrient. Internationally, most clinical trials have used 800 to 1,200 mg of chondroitin sulphate per day, taken once or in divided doses with meals. Common Indian formulations list 200 to 400 mg per tablet, so check the daily total. Check Unbox Health's lab-tested data to verify whether declared chondroitin levels match actual tested content.

Can I get Chondroitin from food?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Only in small, unmeasured amounts. Chondroitin occurs naturally in animal cartilage, so foods like bone broth, mutton paya, and chicken or fish cartilage contain some, but the exact quantity is not well established. Plant foods do not contain chondroitin, so vegetarian diets provide little or none. Evidence that chondroitin from food supports joint health is currently limited, and it is not comparable to the supplement doses used in trials.

How do I know if a Chondroitin supplement is good quality?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

Chondroitin has a long history of quality problems because it is expensive and difficult to test accurately. Studies abroad have found products below label claim or diluted with cheaper substances that basic testing methods can miss. Look for a named source, a clear milligram amount per serving, and an FSSAI licence number. Check Unbox Health's lab-tested data to confirm whether a product delivers the chondroitin content it declares.

Which is the best Chondroitin supplement in India?

Unbox Health FAQ Icon

There is no single best brand; the right choice depends on dose, source and verified content. Look for a daily serving providing 800 to 1,200 mg of chondroitin sulphate, a clearly named source, and FSSAI licensing. In glucosamine and chondroitin combinations, both amounts should be listed separately, not hidden in a blend. Compare Unbox Health's independently tested ratings to see which brands actually deliver the chondroitin content they claim.
