Omega-3 Supplements

Overview

  1. For every Omega-3 Supplement, the following parameters are tested across multiple labs:
      • EPA (mg per capsule)
      • DHA (mg per capsule)
      • ALA (mg per capsule)
      • Total Omega-3 Fatty Acids (mg per capsule): Calculated as sum of EPA, DHA, ALA
      • Heavy Metals - Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury (ppm - parts per million)
  1. Since every parameter gets tested at multiple labs, Unbox Health arrives at a consensus value for each parameter based on our internal consensus rules.
  1. Finally, the consensus values are used to derive a product’s Label Accuracy Score and Non-Toxicity Score. From these, the product’s Aggregate score and Rating are calculated.

Label Accuracy Score

Label Accuracy Score is defined here.
For Omega-3 Supplements, an Accuracy value is calculated for these parameters: EPA, DHA, ALA, EPA+DHA, Total Omega-3. Once these Accuracy values are computed, the Label Accuracy Score is calculated using this formula:
👉
Label Accuracy Score = Average (EPA Accuracy, DHA Accuracy, ALA Accuracy, EPA+DHA Accuracy, Total Omega-3 Accuracy)

The Accuracy value for a parameter is calculated by comparing the lab test result vs the label claim using the scale shown below. The scale is defined as per FSSAI guidelines, while allowing for a standardised margin of uncertainty in lab testing.

Parameter Accuracy
Range
Notes
EPA Accuracy
0.00 - 1.00
Only used if EPA value is explicitly claimed on product label.
DHA Accuracy
0.00 - 1.00
Only used if DHA value is explicitly claimed on product label.
ALA Accuracy
0.00 - 1.00
Only used if ALA value is explicitly claimed on product label.
EPA+DHA Accuracy
0.00 - 1.00
Only used if EPA+DHA value is explicitly claimed on product label.
Total Omega-3 Accuracy
0.00 - 1.00
Only used if Total Omega-3 value is explicitly claimed on product label.
Note: For Omega-3 Supplements, if a parameter’s lab result falls between ±15mg of the label claim (per capsule), the accuracy value for that parameter is assumed to be 1.00.

Non-Toxicity Score

Non-Toxicity Score is defined here.
For Omega-3 Supplements, a Non-Toxicity value is calculated for these parameters: Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury. Once these Non-Toxicity values are computed, the Non-Toxicity Score is calculated using this formula:
👉
Non-Toxicity Score = Lead Non-Toxicity x Arsenic Non-Toxicity x Cadmium Non-Toxicity x Mercury Non-Toxicity

The Non-Toxicity value for a parameter is calculated by comparing the lab test result vs the FSSAI limits for that parameter using the scale shown below. The scale is defined as per FSSAI guidelines.

Non-Toxicity Values
Range
Notes
Lead Non-Toxicity
0.00 - 1.00
Calculated based on FSSAI guidelines for Lead levels
Arsenic Non-Toxicity
0.00 - 1.00
Calculated based on FSSAI guidelines for Arsenic levels
Cadmium Non-Toxicity
0.00 - 1.00
Calculated based on FSSAI guidelines for Cadmium levels
Mercury Non-Toxicity
0.00 - 1.00
Calculated based on FSSAI guidelines for Mercury levels
