Coffee Powder

Overview

  1. For every Coffee Powder, the following parameters are tested across multiple labs:
      • Caffeine content (g per 100g)
      • Chlorogenic Acid content (g per 100g)
      • Heavy Metals - Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury (ppm - parts per million)
      • Total Aflatoxins (ppb - parts per billion)
      • Ochratoxin-A (ppb - parts per billion)
  1. Since every parameter gets tested at multiple labs, Unbox Health arrives at a consensus value for each parameter based on our internal consensus rules.
  1. Finally, the consensus values are used to derive a product’s Label Accuracy Score and Non-Toxicity Score. From these, the product’s Aggregate score and Rating are calculated.

Label Accuracy Score

Label Accuracy Score is defined here.
For Coffee Powders, a Min Caffeine Index & CGA Potency Index is calculated based on the Caffeine content and Chlorogenic Acid content respectively. Once these value are computed, the Label Accuracy Score is calculated using this formula:
👉
Label Accuracy Score = Min Caffeine Indexx2/3 + CGA Potency Indexx1/3

The Min Caffeine Index value is calculated based on this chart below - relative to FSSAI guidelines for minimum caffeine content:
Coffee Product Type
FSSAI Minimum for Caffeine Content
Instant Coffee, No Chicory
2.8g per 100g
Instant Coffee, Chicory Mix
1.4g per 100g
Ground Coffee, No Chicory
1.0g per 100g
Ground Coffee, Chicory Mix
0.6g per 100g

The CGA Potency Index value is calculated based on the Chlorogenic Acid (CGA) content of the product. As per existing literature, in order to experience the potential health benefits of Chlorogenic Acid (CGA), a minimum daily intake of 200mg per day of CGA is advised. The CGA Potency Index determines if 2 Servings of consuming a particular Coffee would provide this minimum level of CGA.
Coffee Product Type
Quantity of Coffee Powder per Serving
Instant Coffee
2g per serving
Ground Coffee
10g per serving

Non-Toxicity Score

Non-Toxicity Score is defined here.
For Coffee Powders, a Non-Toxicity value is calculated for these parameters: Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury, Aflatoxins(B,G) & Ochratoxin-A. Once these Non-Toxicity values are computed, the Non-Toxicity Score is calculated using this formula:
👉
Non-Toxicity Score = Lead Non-Toxicity x Arsenic Non-Toxicity x Cadmium Non-Toxicity x Mercury Non-Toxicity x Aflatoxin-BG Non-Toxicity x Ochratoxin-A Non-Toxicity

The Non-Toxicity value for a parameter is calculated by comparing the lab test result vs the FSSAI limits for that parameter using the scale shown below. The scale is defined as per FSSAI guidelines.
