Arsenic Testing for Marine Products

As of June 2026, Unbox Health has updated our rating methodology for Marine-based products.

What has changed?

Starting June 2026, we have updated how we evaluate arsenic toxicity in Marine-based products. Specifically, we now test for Inorganic Arsenic content in addition to Total Arsenic content (as per FSSAI guidelines), to ensure our methodology is consistent with global standards and current scientific evidence.

Why are you testing for Inorganic Arsenic?

Arsenic in food and supplement products exists in two forms: Organic Arsenic and Inorganic Arsenic. Inorganic Arsenic is the form associated with health risks, including toxicity at elevated exposure levels. Testing for it gives us a more precise picture of the actual risk a product may pose to consumers.

Why does this only apply to Marine-based products?

Marine ingredients are the primary dietary source of Organic Arsenic. In non-marine products, Organic Arsenic is not present in meaningful amounts, which means Total Arsenic is already a reliable indicator of risk. In Marine-based products, however, high Organic Arsenic content can inflate Total Arsenic readings — making it harder to assess actual risk without separating the two forms. Testing for Inorganic Arsenic specifically allows us to make that distinction.
